So you can use your hands in the Facebook metaverse

The update focuses on recognizing movement when part of the hand is blocked from the camera image. In this way, the device should be able to capture cheers, high fives, crossed hands, and other gestures involving occlusion.

Not just Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram: Meta is also working on Quest, the virtual reality (VR) viewer originally born as Oculus. One of the latest improvements is mixed reality hand tracking to support multiple types of movements, including high fives and clapping. Credit for that goes to the new Presence platform update, which will only be released after a select developer preview, with the aim of ensuring a more advanced and realistic set of interactions in VR.

The update focuses in particular on recognizing movement when part of the hand is blocked from the camera image. In this way, despite the occlusion, the device should be able to capture cheers, high fives, crossed hands, and other gestures. Added to this is the thumb up movement and more specific interface interactions such as pinch, grab and poke. As if that weren’t enough, the development teams working on Presence have created custom gestures, such as hitting a punching bag. So it’s clear that Quest is no longer a device relegated to VR, but a tool that merges the physical and virtual worlds, from a perspective that sees the metaverse in the middle.

In addition to Quest, Meta is working on other “future devices,” such as the glove that can produce tactile feedback and capture movement and the augmented reality (AR) wristband to read neural activity from the arm. This is possible thanks to technology created by the startup CTRL-Labs, which was later acquired by Mark Zuckerberg’s company in 2019.

The world of virtual interactions is in a phase of significant change. Besides Meta, there are also big steps forward for holographic communication. NASA’s latest operation in conjunction with the International Space Station (ISS) opens the door to a new frontier for human interactions over great distances.
